Adelaide Sevens Reaction - What they said

Monday 6 April 2009

All the reaction from the Adelaide International Sevens...

'The guys showed true character and composure and a great desire to win, especially after our loss in the pool against Kenya. We really like to play in Adelaide as it suits our style of play.' Winning South African coach Paul Treu.

'I'm still reluctant (to say that the World Series is won). Yes it is going to be difficult for the other teams but we would tend to focus on the things that are in our control and win more tournaments.' Paul Treu is taking nothing for granted after his sides Adelaide win.

'Kenya are such good ambassadors for the game and they attract a huge following wherever they go. They were the absolute crowd favourites, but we did not allow ourselves to be distracted. We have set ourselves some targets for the season and one of them was to retain our Adelaide title.' Treu is full of praise for the beaten finalists who finally reached a Cup Final in their 52nd IRB Sevens event.

'The players were focused and were very determined to win after we come so close in Hong Kong last weekend.'The SA captain Mpho Mbiyozo who received the Player of the Tournament award.

'I was happy with the side’s commitment, the game is all about ticker. We’ve got a group of guys here who won’t give up.'Australian coach Michael O’Connor reflects.

'To show the resilience to beat a good New Zealand side and then follow up with an Australian side that beat us on Friday night, was brilliant…And one day they'll be at Twickenham and know that they've knocked over these sides at various levels in the game.' England Coach Ben Ryan looks ahead to the next leg of the IRB World Sevens Series in London.

'We are out for the count. But it could be anyone else's. Some of them are perhaps not conditioned as much as they should have been, perhaps because they haven't been playing in tournaments. But I can see some players who will be there for a little while, they will grow with the game.' New Zealand Coach -Gordan Tietjens is looking for the future.

'I think this is my last Sevens tournament, we need to find another Sevens playmaker and I need to move onto 15s. I think I'm too old for this now and I need to look for a contract to look after my family.' Samoa Captain Uale Mai.

'I think we have the nucleus of new young players and if we can keep them together I think we'll do well in the upcoming events and next year's Series.' USA Coach Al Caravelli winners of the Shield in Adelaide.

'There's no firm commitment from anyone but it's been the subject of a bit of discussion over a few oysters today. The possibility of Adelaide hosting the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament is worthwhile thinking about.' Australian Rugby boss John O’Neil gives a snippet of the lunchtime chat at the Adelaide Oval.
