England Women announce squad for Amsterdam

The England Women’s squad to compete in the Amsterdam Sevens on May 19 & 20 has been announced.

Saracens’ Sonia Green will captain the side who head to Holland straight after this weekend’s IRB Women’s Challenge Cup at the Marriott London Sevens. Green takes over the captaincy armband from Wasps’ Michaela Staniford who is being rested for this tournament.

Also new to the England squad are Wasps’ Natasha Brennan and Bristol’s Katie Mason. The duo join a line-up mixed with experience and youth. The likes of Jenny Brightmore and Emily Scott will be looking to build on their experiences with England in Dubai while Heather Fisher, Alice Richardson and Rachael Burford are amongst the more senior players.

12 international teams will compete for the coveted Amsterdam Sevens crown and England will face the USA, South Africa and Wales in Pool A. Pool B pits Canada, Spain, France and newcomers Ireland against each other, with the final pool seeing the hosts take on Australia, Germany and Scotland.

England Women’s Sevens Head Coach Barry Maddocks said: “We have mixed up our sevens squad for this tournament. It is important that we give as many of our players a chance to develop at this level and that is what we are doing for the Amsterdam Sevens. It will be an important experience for our less experienced players to taste international rugby at this level and the pressure it brings.

“This will be a tough pool with the USA, South Africa and Wales all in the mix. Wales will certainly be looking to put in a good performance ahead of the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens qualifying tournament later this year, while the USA have been regulars in the knock out stages of the IRB Women’s Challenge Cup tournaments and South Africa have also pushed us close in recent games.”

OK. For anyone who has not heard. There is a ganhiretg this Saturday, November 12th at Mosaic from 5 to 7pm all you can drink for $25 I will also try to have some Paleo treats on hand For those of you who asked what this ganhiretg is for, I promise this is not a narcissistic self promoted event I'd certainly allow one of you to throw a party in my honor whenever your heart desires but this is for a far better purpose.Come along and help us honor, thank and celebrate our veteran coaches (Voight, Ant, and you too Mikey O).It will be a chance for us to appreciate those who put thier dreams on hold making a sacrifice so that all of us can more safely and freely work toward our own. We are honored to call them coaches and friends. If you are or know anyone in our CFQ family who should also be celebrated this day, please let me know.Come celebrate with us. I need to get a handle on a head count to formally set things up, so I'd appreciate confirmation and payment at your convenience. I'll be in for 8pm classes all week.Thanks!
