Millfield take Colts glory at National Schools Sevens

Friday 27 March 2009 (UR7s)

The fourth day of "the world's largest rugby tournament" yet again did not fail to impress, with Millfield taking the glory from a strong Bedford side in the Colts tournament.

Millfield made an emphatic start to the day's proceedings, getting their revenge on the school that knocked them out of last year's event - and last year's runner up - Tonbridge, with a convincing 31 point margin. Their semi-final was a more closely fought encounter in a North vs South epic with Ampleforth (breeding ground of 7s World Cup Winner, Lawrence Dallaglio), in which two scores was enough to see the Somerset side through.

Meanwhile, Bedford, in the knock-out stages of the Colts competition for the first time, showed some real class in overcoming a confident Blundell's team in their quarter-final 26-7. Another tight and breathless semi-final then saw Bedford dig deep to battle out a 15-7 victory over rugby powerhouse, RGS High Wycombe (breeding ground of 7s World Cup Winners, Matt Dawson and Nick Beal).

Millfield, finalists in three of the last five National Schools Colts tournaments, were favourites going into the final, but - as we saw in the World Cup ealier this month - anything can happen in Sevens. However, fitness is key in a prolonged final game and the boys from Bedford just didn't quite have enough. Millfield deserved winners, but a fine showing from Bedford - expect to see more of them in the final stages in years to come.

As for Millfield, their attention now turns to the Open Tournament, the final stages of which are played along the Girls tournament on Friday. The pressure is certainly on their senior boys - do they have what it takes to pull off the double? Stay tuned...
