Schoolboy Sevens the star in New Zealand this weekend

Thursday 1 December 2011 (Nick Jordan)

Rugby Sevens sensation Joe Webber may be absent but an abundance of talent will still be part of the 25th edition of the BNZ Condor Sevens on Sunday.

Webber, who made the Condor tournament team in 2010, is in Dubai with the New Zealand Sevens team having made his debut on the IRB Sevens World Series last weekend.

“I’m disappointed I can't play for Hamilton BHS and I hope the boys go well but I’m looking forward to travelling the world playing rugby,” said the 18-year old fullback who was also part of the New Zealand Secondary Schools XV in October.

However several teammates from that side that lost 19-26 to Australia - Mitch Brown (New Plymouth BHS), Ben Edwards (Feilding HS), Dillan Halaholo (Mt Albert GS), Kane Jacobson (Hamilton BHS) and Lolagi Visinia (Kelston BHS) - are among those lining up in the national secondary schools sevens championship at the College Rifles RFC.

Visinia, a pacy fullback, has already made the Auckland senior sevens squad and will be a key player as Kelston defend the title they won 26-17 over MAGS a year ago. The West Aucklanders face NPBHS, St Patrick’s College (Silverstream) and Nelson College in a daunting Pool A.

Brown, a blindside flanker from Inglewood, has made every Taranaki representative team since he was at primary school and was also in the Hurricanes Secondary Schools in 2011.

Halaholo is part of a strong MAGS team in Pool B with Rotorua BHS, Napier BHS and Otago BHS. The hooker, who captains the 1st XV but hands over the duties to Shaun Devine for the Condor Sevens, was also in the tournament team a year ago and has represented the champion Blues Secondary Schools side.

Halfback Edwards moved to Feilding HS this year from St Peter’s (Palmerston North) and made the Hurricanes Schools before getting into the New Zealand squad. Feilding squares off against Wesley College, Rosmini College and Southland BHS in Pool C.

Meanwhile Jacobson, who was part of the HBHS that lost in the semi-finals last year, is an openside flanker and has been a standout performer for the school this season. The two-time Condor champions meet Whangarei BHS, Auckland GS and Shirley BHS in Pool D.

A host of other regional representatives play for their school – many for the final time – on Sunday. The Blues’ Pele Cowley (MAGS) joins Chiefs Jacob Skeen (HBHS), Matt Axtens and Mason Walker (both Rotorua) and Hame Faiva, Louis Rogers and Harry Luteru (all Wesley) from the northern region.

Silverstream captain Aviata Silago represented the Hurricanes SS this year while South Island SS players include Mitchell Drummond and Steven Soper (Nelson College) and the Otago BHS quartet of Brodie Hume, Mike McKee, Sean Conner and Josh Dickson. Mike Collins is unavailable having been selected in Otago’s senior squad for 2012.

Sons of famous fathers stepping out include NPBHS captain Lachlan Bunn, whose father Lyall is a former Taranaki prop, Napier twins Jesse and Kalin Paewai (sons of Murdoch, the Hawke’s Bay Sevens coach), Auckland Grammar skipper Renata Roberts Tenana, the son of Karl, who is still New Zealand’s record tryscorer in Rugby Sevens, and the HBHS pairing of Luke Masirewa (son of former New Zealand Sevens star Waisiki) and Bryn Gatland (whose father Warren is away coaching Wales).

Pool play starts at 8:45am with the BNZ Condor Cup final scheduled for 3:40pm. Entry is free.
