Gregor 'quietly confident' of Scotland making the quarters on the Gold Coast

Thursday 17 November 2011 (Gold Coast)

COLIN Gregor knows all about the excitement of a home Commonwealth Games.

The Scottish rugby Sevens captain and native Glaswegian, on the Coast for the opening round of the Sevens World Series next week, is determined to lead his side in a home Games in Glasgow in 2014.

And he knows the excitement Gold Coasters must have felt at hearing their city named the host of the 2018 Games.

''We've got Glasgow for 2014, so I've got to hang on for that,'' he said of competing in front of a home crowd.

''I doubt I'll make 2018 but it's great for the Gold Coast to have the Commonwealth Games here, it's certainly given Glasgow a big lift back at home.''

While he's a proud Scot, Gregor is happy to be on the Coast soaking up some sun ahead of the opening round of the World Series.

''It was beginning to get pretty cold and dark and wet, so it was a good time to get out of there,'' he said.

Instead, he and teammates hit the surf at Main Beach ahead of training at The Southport School where they will try to acclimatise ahead of the first three World Series tournaments - on the Gold Coast, Dubai and South Africa - which are being held back-to-back.

Scotland need to hit the ground running if they are to progress from their pool which also includes England, Wales and Tonga.

''It'll be very difficult. We had a warm-up tournament a couple of weeks back over in Spain and played both England and Wales, so we know where they're at,'' Gregor said.

''We didn't actually win either of the games but they were pretty close.

''We were slightly less prepared than they were, so by tournament time over here I reckon it will be a bit more even. Tonga are a totally different proposition but tough.''

Gregor said the Scots were ''quietly confident'' of making the Cup quarter-finals.

''We've been training well, had a lot more preparation this year than in years gone by,'' he said. ''We're hoping that the next couple of weeks before the tournament we can get another solid bit of training done and hopefully go well next weekend.''

Reflecting the prominence of Sevens on the rugby calendar, the Scots are all specialists in the short form of the game.

''We still play a bit of 15s but our focus is on Sevens,'' Gregor said.

''The fact that it's in the Olympics is obviously providing a lot more focus for it and attention - you have to (focus) otherwise you're going to get left behind.''
