more »Heathens win National Championships in Uganda

LEAGUE Champions Heathens, made history on Saturday when they lifted the national sevens circuit title unbeaten. They won the three circuits played this season to take the title a record ninth time since 2001.
On top of reclaiming the title they lost to Xfm Impis last year, the team was also rewarded with sh500,000 as the winners’ cash prize. Kobs are the other side that has won it - in 2006.
A star studded Heathens called on experience to beat Kobs, who fielded a largely developing side 19-7 in the final on a wet flooded Kampala Rugby Footbal Club.
Allan Otim and Michael Wokorach scored a try each while Benon Kiiza added a conversion to give Heathens a 12-0 half time lead.
After the break, Kobs’ Joseph Aredo and Kelvin Makmot replied with a try and conversion but Heathens stretched it further with a try by Brian Kikawa and a subsequent conversion by Kiiza.
Kobs’ coach Ronnie Lutakome and his Pirates counter parts Steven Ojambo congratulated Heathens for victory but promised a tougher challenge next year.
“I am impressed with the boys’ performance and I am confident next year will put up a better show for the title,”
Kobs and Pirates received sh300,000 and sh200,000 for finishing second and third respectively.
Uganda Christian University’s UCU Shepherds retained the university rugby league trophy after Kyambogo failed to turn up for the playoff game at Kampala club Sunday.
said UCU captain, Andrew Omoding. “We are happy to have won because this tournament was a tough one because all the teams were good,”
