The British Army Rugby Sevens team who mesmerised crowds with their performances en-route to winning back to back titles in 2001 and 2002 return to the Safaricom Sevens this weekend at the Nyayo Stadium after a nine-year hiatus.
The team has over the years built a considerable reputation in Sevens rugby, winning a number of tournaments they have participated in.
Their presence at the 16th edition of the tournament will definitely give the fans something to look forward to, as they go in pursuit of a third Robin Cahill main cup trophy in their third visit to the Kenyan capital.
Also returning to the Safaricom Sevens are ULR Samurai International RFC, one of the most prestigious, recognised, and feared teams on the International circuit. Famed for their striking kit, professional attitude and on-field flair, they have grown in to arguably the world's most successful invitational Sevens team.
Playing fantastic running rugby in their striking and unique playing kit, the Samurai have promised to bring a strong team to Nairobi with the sole intention of lifting the Safaricom Sevens title.
Samoa, winners of the 2005 edition are back for the first time since 2009 and will be out to make a statement that is louder than the one they pronounced while beating South Africa's Western Province to lift the Robin Cahill trophy six years ago.
Bristol University have been staunch supporters of the tournament, taking part at every edition since its inception in 1996 and are back to have another stab at being crowned Safaricom Sevens champions.
South Africa's Emerging Boks, former Safaricom Sevens champions and perennial title contenders will be part of the returnees. The Emerging Boks lost 17-12 to Kenya in a pulsating final played at the RFUEA grounds. They hope the switch to Nyayo Stadium will bring with it a change in their fortunes.
Auckland are expected to make their debut in the event with amalgamation of 20 clubs within New Zealand's Auckland province, and playing under the Auckland Rugby Football Union. They are the current New Zealand National Sevens Champions, winning the title after beating Taranaki 36-26 in the title match played in January.
Auckland has produced previous and present New Zealand rugby internationals, including Bryce Heem, a key member of their 2010-2011 HSBC Sevens World Series title winning team. They will bring their strong brand of sevens rugby to the Nyayo Stadium.
American side Belmont Shore RFC has been one of the premier Rugby Football Clubs in America since their formation in 1974. The 2009 United States Sevens National Championship winners will probably have in their ranks Anthony Ongoro, a former Kenya Sevens international who won the Kenya Cup with Impala RFC and also featured in the Kenya Sevens squad that qualified for the 2001 RWC Sevens in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Spain are relishing the opportunity of testing themselves against the competition at the Safaricom Sevens. They competed in selected legs of the 2010-2011 HSBC Sevens World Series, posting some positive results and will see the Safaricom Sevens as a perfect avenue for them to further hone their skills.
