Talisman William Ryder is hoping to be the creative spark to inject life into Fiji’s World Sevens Series campaign. After disappointing returns in both George and Dubai, player coach Waisale Serevi is hoping his South Sea Drifters side, comprising most of the Fijian Squad, can return to winning ways at Darwin’s Hottest Sevens.
Ryder, who has not been a regular of late due to his club commitments in Japan, is now back in the fold and looking to rediscover his old touch in bringing some glory at the next leg of the series at Wellington.
"I'm looking forward to joining the boys, and especially playing with Serevi," Ryder told The Fiji Times.
"When you're on the field playing with Serevi, it's just like sailing a ship on a very calm sea.
"When you're playing alongside the maestro, you are confident in what you do on the field.
"I'm ready to come and play for Fiji and help restore lost glory.
"I'm glad that coach Serevi has included me in the Drifters team and this is a big boost to me as I really want to have run and fight my way back into the national team."
In response to the Fijian’s disappointing start, Serevi has bought the squad together early to iron out the errors which have littered their normally fluid brand of rugby.
"So far it's been positive," he said of Fiji's recent training regime, speaking to Yahoo!Xtra Sport
"I know the players had commitments during the holiday season, but they sacrificed it all to face the mental hurdles, which is a good sign.
"We learnt a lot of lessons in the first leg and a change in attitude is a must if we are to progress and do well in the remaining legs of the series.
"If the players can understand and do their part then my work will become easier.
"The players must train harder on their own and not wait for the Fiji Rugby Union to call them into camp for it. It's their responsibility."
