British Army select powerful side for Middlesex 7s tilt

Thursday 7 July 2011

Fresh off a 2nd place finish in the Super Sevens Series, the British Army have selected a powerful side for this weekends Middlesex Sevens tournament at Twickenham as they aim to win back the famous cup that they last won in 2004.

The Power up front comes Fijian 15s and 7s international Apo Satala and the irrepressible Joe Kava. Satala will captain the side at a stadium where he has played many times. The British Army will be more at home than most at Twickenham due to their annual fixture with the Royal Navy.

The Army of course face very different obstacles when selecting a side than the invitational teams do with player release. The Army 7s squad currently has 7 of it's players deployed abroad in miliatary action and a further 5 on training courses but as with all Army sides, they will be looking to entertain the crowds with their physical brand of rugby that includes less Fijian soldiers than in the past.

Makai Burenivalu brings some spice to the backline, 'Bunny' as he is afectionately known on the 7s circuit will once again be looking to unlock defenses with footwork and skill. Malaki Magnus is also one of the best 7s exponents, plying his trade in the UK and opposition will have to keep an eye on him.

New to the 7s squad this year is Alex Swann and Morgan Evans who both will be looking to impress in what is rumoured to be the last ever Middlesex Sevens.

The Army side is once again coached by former Fijian 7s international Cpl Alfred Vakacoko Vanua of the Scots Guards, who brings with him a vast amount of 7s experience, who in his own calm way has the Army side playing their own brand of the game.
