England Women announce squad for West Country 7s

Tuesday 14 June 2011 (RFU.com)

The England Women’s Squad to compete in the West Country 7s at Keynsham Rugby Club on June 18 has been announced and includes three changes to the side which lost out to the Wooden Spoons 14-7 in the final of Rugby Rocks.

2010 World Cup Finalists, Heather Fisher and Danielle Waterman are called up to bring experience to the maturing side and are named alongside Worcester’s Sarah Guest. Sally Tuson, Charlotte Wild and, Rugby Rocks three time try scorer, Charlotte Keane stand down.

West Country 7s is the second tournament in England’s development programme and they have been drawn against Shamrock Warriors, Quin Warrior Ladies A and Eggcatcher Ladies for the group stage.

The tournament also features sevens supremos the Wooden Spoons, Pink Baa Baas and Samurai Ladies, which makes going one step further than runners-up no easy feat for England.

England 7s Head Coach, Barry Maddocks, said: “This programme is all about development, we have made changes to the side to try different combinations. Whether they are included in the side or not, is no reflection on particular players. To get the balance between the experienced and less experienced players is important for the development of the side as a whole.

“For this tournament we have some of the more experienced players available and want to make the most of that. The girls coming into the squad bring skill and knowledge across some key areas and hopefully this additional support will help those who have been kept on.

“The beauty of sevens is that you often don’t know who you will be competing against. Although the names of the sides are familiar, you can’t be sure who will be selected or invited to play. What you can guarantee, however, is that teams such as Spoons, Baa Baas and Samurai will bring a real competitive edge.

“We would like to go one further than Rugby Rocks and not only reach but win the final, but as long as the girls develop, we can class it as a successful tournament.”
