Former Trinidad and Tobago national 7s rugby champion Rainbow sports and cultural club dominated proceedings on day of the Bavaria sponsored Curacao International 7's rugby tournament at Curacao[SDK] Sentro Deportivo Korsou.(National stadium).
The two day tournament got underway under lights on Friday evening . The South Trinidad ,Trainline,Marabella based community organisation traveled to the Dutch Caribbean Island with two teams.Their senior team( Rainbow one) and another team(Rainbow two) comprising mainly under 19 players from the club's youth development programme.
Club founder and team manager Rudolph Jack said his club viewed participating in the tournament as an integral part of its player and community development outreach.
"Thank you to the Ministry of Sport for their support. Rainbow is not your traditional rugby or sports club. We are a community focused organisation working with the youth through sport. In so doing we have made a significant mark in rugby and rugby 7s in particular. Coming to Curacao affords our players ,senior and under 19s, an opportunity to experience rugby, culture and life in a different environment and country. the benefits go far far beyond rugby."
Philosophy aside Jack expressed satisfaction with the day one results but he however cautioned his players against becoming complacent.
"Last year we finished runner up to the T&T national rugby 7s team here in Curacao. This year we intend to go one better. We invited three national players as guest players. As I am of the view that it is important for the clubs in T&T to share knowledge and experiences for the betterment of the game. We(Rainbow) have never been invited by the clubs in the North when they are making tours but I look at the bigger picture. While I want my club to win all the TTRFU competitions . I also want T&T rugby to improve and do well. Rugby in T&T can only improve if all the clubs raise their standards so that the quality of play becomes more competitive."
Jack said this evening( day two) he expects Rainbow one toughest opposition to come form Haagsche rugby club, a professional club from Holland.
"The team from Holland looked competitive. The Rainbow youth team has a couple experienced players but it would be tough for them to get pass the senior(Rainbow) team.It is a seven team round robin tournament format so it is important for the players to stay focused. The objective is to keep the title in T&T but this time take it to Trainline,Marabella."
The two day tournament ends tonight and the Rainbow team returns to Trinidad tomorrow.
