Covenant Brothers and Wasps Ladies triumph in Windsor Sevens
Two invitation sides, Covenant Brothers and Apache Academy, fought out the main cup final in
the fourth annual Windsor RFC seven-a-side tournament at Home Park, Windsor last Saturday
(30 April). The Fijian Covenant Brothers proved the faster and stronger, winning by 31 points
to 7. The Ladies’ Cup was won Wasps who beat three-times winners Richmond 27-12 in an
exciting final.

A total of 23 teams took part. The standard of rugby was higher than ever and the hot weather
and hard pitches made for some fast open games. Local interest in the men’s competition
centred on Slough, Marlow and Reading. In the ladies’ event, Maidenhead, making their debut
in sevens, found it hard going against more experienced opposition.
Slough struggled early on with injuries and too few players but finished strongly to lift the Vase,
beating Ickenham 24-12 in the final. Marlow acquitted themselves well, winning all four of their
pool games and beating Ramblin’ Jesters in the quarter final of the main cup competition before
going down by 21-19 to the Apache Academy in the semis. Reading won two and lost two of
their pool games but lost in the semi-finals of the Plate by 40 points to 20 against the Phantoms.
