Rogue Traders take the Pocklington 7s

Wednesday 27 April 2011 (Pocklington 7s, UR7s)

Seven-a-side rugby is a young mans game, and student invitation side,
Rogue Traders, overcame Bishop Burton College in and absorbing final to
win the 53rd Guinness Pock 7s on Good Friday.

It was a record breaking day as a crowd of 3,000 basked in the Bank
Holiday sunshine and enjoyed an afternoon of eight hours of quality
rugby. Rogue Traders, an invitation side of former Sedbergh students
who took their name from the band whose music was used as the theme tune of the Hong Kong Sevens,
certainly did it the hard way. They knocked out the holders and sevens
specialists, Ronin, in their first game with a sudden death winner
after the sides had been locked at 24-24 at full-time. They then had to
work hard, but made more comfortable progress, to overcome North East
side, KS Crusaders, and Old Hymerians, before meeting Bishop Burton
College in the final.

Bishop Burton had put aside the local challenge by beating Pocklington,
Driffield and Malton & Norton before knocking out Catterick Garrison's
teamof Fijians in their semi final. Bishop Burton raced into a 12-0 early
lead in the final but Rogue Traders hung in and their surer handling
was the difference as they turned the tables to pull away to win 36-17.

The Plate Competition produced an equally exciting finale as Ronin also
went two tries up but were gradually reeled in by determined hosts,
Pocklington. Three opportunist score got Pocklington back on terms and
Pocklington's committment shone through in the second half as they
stormed to victory by 43-21.

The women also got in on the seven-a-side act and their mini tournment
at the start of the day saw Doncaster overcome Pocklington and Hull to
take the honours.
