Aussie Women hunting more silverware

Tuesday 17 March 2009 (IRB)

The World Champion Wallaroo Sevens team is set to compete at the Hong Kong Women's tournament on Friday 27 March, their first outing since winning the first Rugby World Cup Sevens for women two weeks ago.

This year's Hong Kong Women's Sevens is the 12th of its kind, with Dubai, San Diego, and Edinburgh the other events to host women's tournaments on the IRB Sevens World Series circuit.

Australia overcame England, USA and trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand to capture world gold in Dubai and face another strong international line-up in Hong Kong, including three other World Cup sides, Hong Kong, China and Thailand.

While the Wallaroos won five of their six World Cup matches in Dubai - their loss came on day one against France - China won four of their six games and could present their toughest test in Hong Kong.

The Chinese lost to Australia and France on day one but saw off the Netherlands and then triumphed against Japan, Italy and Brazil on day two to capture the Bowl title.

The Wallaroos face Arabian Gulf, Singapore, Tunisia and Guam in their pool matches at the Hong Kong Football Club in Happy Valley, while in the other pool China face three more Asian teams in Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand, as well as Papua New Guinea.

With no England, South Africa, and New Zealand to contend with the Wallaroos are the overwhelming favorites for the title.

The Women’s inaugural participation was a particularly important step with an Olympic decision hanging over rugby sevens. Another competitive and good showing in Hong Kong could again be beneficial for the game as a whole.

The Women's final in Hong Kong will be played at the Hong Kong Stadium between matches on the first day of the Men's competition.
