University of Victoria wins inaugural National University Sevens Championships

Under beautiful sunny skies at UBC Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday afternoon the Uvic Vikes defeated the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 34-17 to win the Inaugural National University 7's Championships.

The Vikes were led by Canadian International players Phil Mack, Sean Duke, Beau Parker and Bowl Championship 'Man of the Match' Nathan Hirayama.

The University of Western Ontario Mustangs played valiently throughout the tournament and showed moments of brilliance in the final, but in the end the confidence and experience of the Vikes was too much for the Ontario Team.

Tournament MVP was awarded to Connor Trainor (Western) after he impressed the crowd, and Canadian Coaching Staff, at Thunderbird Stadium all weekend.

In the Plate Final the host UBC Team defeated OUA defending champions McMaster 31-0. In the Bowl Championship the University of Calgary defeated the Underdog UBC Okanagan team 17-14. UBC Oakanagan was a crowd favourite at the Stadium due to the teams lack of experience in rugby 7's.

In an all Alberta Shield Final, Mount Royal University defeated the University of Alberta to round out the days games.
