Barracudas take Nawaka 7s as Fijians move on to Marist 7s

Tuesday 1 March 2011 (fijivillage.com)

Nine out of the 12 players that played in the Digicel Fiji 7s team in the USA 7s final are likely to be in action in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s this weekend after a solid showing by some at the Nawaka 7s this past weekend

The likes of Jerry Burotu, Watisoni Votu, Miti Nacagilevu, Apisai Nayabo, Peni Gaunimeke, Waqabaca Kotobalavu and Ilai Tinai are in camp with the Fiji Barbarians team.

Captain Emosi Vucago will be rested with Nikola Matawalu and Joeli Lutumailagi.

Meanwhile, during the Marist 7s the host team will wear black arm bands in all its matches whilst in the Fiji Bitter Cup Final, the two teams will wear black arm bands in respect for the Christchurch earthquake victims.

The 35th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s this weekend will be the last chance for players to impress the selectors to force their way into the Digicel Fiji 7s team for the Hong Kong and Australia Sevens.

Although a second string Fiji Babas team lost to the Wardens in the semifinal of the Nawaka 7s, the selectors have not included any new players in their extended group of 17 players with only France based Setefano Cakau the new inclusion.

Coach Iliesa Tanivula used the services of policeman Sakenasa Aca, Apenisa Dralia and Waisale Dau last weekend and will be in the team again for the Marist 7s.

The Marist 7s kicks off on Friday at 9am at the TFL National Stadium, with the winner walking away with $25,000.

Last weekend saw the Nawaka 7s take place which saw many of the above taking part, attempting to impress national selectors before Hong Kong and Adelaide in the HSBC World Sevens Series. It was the Samurai Barracudas who took the prize beating out the Wardens in the final. The Barracudas are a well-known brand in the UK and Europe but this was their first big win on Fijian soil.
