SRC Borneo Eagles yesterday collected the $24,000 prize for winning the 2011 Hottest 7s in the World final at Darwin's Austar Park.
In a game of contrasting styles, SRC Borneo Eagles used speed and clever stepping to overcome a more powerful Davetalevu 25-19 and became only the second team to win the Heineken Hottest 7s titles back to back.
With high stakes up for grabs, both teams started nervously, but the Timoa Tomeru scored first for the mainly Fijian Davetalevu. This sparked the Eagles into action and Phil Tuigamala, then Ratu Manoa scored in quick succession and gave the Borneo a 12-7 lead at half-time. It was try for try after the break, but the Eagles hung on with skipper, and the grand final's best player, Kaino Kaino defending grimly.
All eyes were well and truly focused on the undefeated Eastsyde 7s and Bush Turkeyz when they met in the women's final. In a wonderful advertisement for women's rugby, Tui Cope from Eastsyde 7s crossed for a try in the final minute with both teams still yet to register a point. The try was converted and Eastsyde 7s retained their Jabiru Cup at the Hottest 7s by defeating a gallant Bush Turkeyz 7-0.
Randwick and Western Wolfpack met in the Buff Final and like each before them, scoring was difficult, but on the back of a sterling performance from forward Matt Ryan, the team from the west triumphed 19-7.
Barra finalists Western Quokkas and East Arnhem from Gove promised a high scoring game after both had huge semi-final wins. However, scoring proved difficult and the game was tight but with East Arnhem's utility Tomi Gunn outstanding, the team from Gove collected the prize 19-12.
Palmerston overcame a 7-5 half-time deficit to take out the Gecko Final against Groote Mudchooks 10-7 in a muddy, mistake ridden contest. The hero for Palmerston was Jarod Deo with a clever running try, but unfortunately he may be lost to Darwin rugby with the chance he may establish a playing career in Victoria.
