Rugby in Paradise
Rugby Sevens is buzzing in Argentina currently with the international team’s success in USA and at the World Cup in Dubai. The domestic action returns though this weekend with a brand new tournament. The ‘Sevens San Martin of the Sandes’ held at the Athletic Club de Summits in the Andes.
Eight local and regional teams will all be battling it out for the Noregon Glass on Saturday in a tournament that aims to spread and strengthen the game in the area. The Cumkbres club have entered two teams whilst Yunkes, Chenque de Junín of The Sandes, Noregon VII, San Martin of The Sandes RC and Association Acclaim Rugby of the City of Zapala will all be present.
San Martin de los Andes regarded as one the most beautiful and spectacular Andean cities in Patagonia where tourists enjoy a range of culture, activities, and some sensational views.
Thriller in Manila 10s
The Philippines and Nomads Rugby Club are preparing themselves once again for the Manila 10s on March 21-22nd, with the event also celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Manila 10s was the first ever rugby tournament held in the Philippines, and is also the largest played in the country.
The tournament was started in 1989 and was officially the first ever rugby event of it’s kind to be brought to the Philippines. This year sees a record 32 teams playing 76 games over two days and once again enjoys the kudos of being one of the best loved competitions on the Asian circuit. As expected from this type of event it aims to promote and spread the sport in the Philippines; perhaps a key reason behind its growth and success.
Some of rugby’s top luminaries such as David Campese, John Bentley, Nick Farr-Jones, Joel Stransky, Stu Wilson, Elton Flately, and Jeff Probyn have all played during the last two decades. This year’s special guests include legends Frank Bunce and Jeremy Paul whilst defending champions AMEC Black Watch will be back for another assault on the coveted title.
Tens rugby popularity stock is continually rising, laying claim to be a more social sport catering for all types of rugby player, as well as a more realistic development tool for the fifteen-a-side game. Other similar and renowned events in Asia are the Hong Kong 10s and the Bangkok 10s, whilst a new event in Cape Town hosted by Bobby Skinstad and Robbie Fleck has also proved popular.
