Japan remain the team to beat after the pool stages of the men’s Rugby Sevens at the Asian Games in Guangzhou.
A packed crowd were in attendance at the University Town Main Stadium on Monday to see Japan and hosts China remain unbeaten heading into tomorrow’s quarter-finals.
Overwhelming favourites Japan cruised past Mongolia (55-0), Malaysia (24-0) and Thailand (33-0) in Pool A before meeting arch-rivals Hong Kong in the final game of day 2. The Japanese proved the more ruthless though, striding past their opponents 24-5 to set-up a last eight clash with India.
China thrashed Sri Lanka and India before overcoming the always-competitive Korea 12-5 to go through unbeaten from Pool B. The Chinese will meet Thailand in tomorrow’s quarter-final with Hong Kong/Sri Lanka and Korea/Malaysia completing the quarter-final line-up.
China's women also impressed, justifying their status as gold medal favourites with three imposing wins in the group scoring 116 points and conceding none in their three pool matches against Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand.
The women's second seeds from Kazakhstan were equally impressive in topping their pool with three victories against India, Singapore and Japan.
