Kenya’s 30,000 capacity Nyayo National Stadium played host to the inaugural One Night Stand 7s at the weekend.
Kibera Youth, led by skipper Kevin Wambua and a host of other internationals such as Collins Injera, were victorious claiming the Sh80,000 purse.
In a high quality final it was Kibera edging past Homeboyz I 24-17, scoring four tries to two.
Kibera were first off the blocks to lead 5-0 with a Dennis Ombachi try. But Homeboyz’ Steve Matioli converted Oscar Ayodi’s try for Homeboyz to swing into the driver’s seat with the score at 7-5.
Some quick reflex saw John Ahenda grind home a try to bring back Kibera into the game 12-7 at the interval.
Jeff Sakwa levelled the proceedings for Homeboyz with a try but Collins Omae would break the 12-12 stalemate for Kibera to lead 19-12.
Curtis Katego then hit back for Homeboyz with a try to reduce the deficit at 17-19 as Ken Moseti was then sin-binned for infringement to give Kibera a penalty.
Omae gave it a quick tap and off-loaded the ball to Injera, who sprinted for the winning try. In the semis, Kibera dismantled Pharaohs 26-0 as the Homeboyz crushed Dragons 40-5.
