New Zealand side Grammar-Carlton wrapped up another impressive performance by storming to their third successive title on a pulsating day's action at the 16th Bangkok Rugby Sevens at Klong Chan Stadium yesterday.
In the final, the Auckland-based side overcame a spirited effort by their Australian opponents, Kamilorai Young Guns, with a well-deserved 33-14 victory.
Grammar-Carlton produced a fine display of attacking, efficient and entertaining sevens.
Two tries had seen the Kiwis move into a 12-0 lead by half-time, but Kamilorai reduced the deficit to 12-7 early in the second half and briefly threatened to get back in the game.
However, the strong-running Kiwi side took command again and three second half tries saw them run out worthy winners against the spirited Young Guns who managed to cross their opponents line once more.
The only other side to have achieved three titles in a row at the Bangkok Sevens are Davetelavu from Fiji from 1996-98.
The trophy was presented to the winners by Australian Ambassador Mr James Wise who witnessed the lively afternoon action.
After demolishing Nari Nari Magpies 62-0 earlier in the day, Grammar-Carlton had reached the final with an emphatic 36-0 victory over a committed Singapore CC side, while Kamilorai defeated the Pacific Warriors 40-10 in the semi-finals.
The Plate final turned out to be an all South African affair between Macassar and Macathai who also featured some Thai players.
In a high-scoring final, Macassar were always in charge and displaying lots of pace, ran out deserved 57-12 winners.
The Bowl final between Lopburi and the Old Bangkok Bangers proved to be the closest final of the afternoon in which the Bangers put on a creditable performance against their younger Thai opponents.
Lopburi just had the edge throughout the match, but the Bangers made them fight all the way before the Thai side eventually triumphed as 33-22 winners.
The Beaumont Partnership women's final saw the Bangkok IPE team take on the Murri Magic from Brisbane.
The Australian side proved to be physically too strong for the Thai girls and passing the ball very effectively ran out 42-5 winners.
However the smaller Thai side tackled with great courage and put on a spirited display, winning many admirers. It is the third time they have finished runners-up.

The 2010 Bangkok Sevens was a huge success thanks to those clubs who entered and played brilliantly throughout the weekend with the Macassa 'choir' and French 'vocals' being but one of the highlights. Grammar-Carlton took out their third Championship in a row with clear focus and skill in beating the Kamilaroi Young Guns from the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Foundation, but all teams played their part as did the sponsors, supporters, spectators and officials to make this year's tournament a memorable event. Kate & my thanks to all and hopefully we will see you next year. The 'Colonel'.
