Hong Kong National Sevens Teams will be aiming to win the Borneo Sevens this weekend (Oct 28 - Nov 1) and fine-tune their preparations as the clock ticks down to next month’s Asian Games in Guangzhou.
A 12-man squad, boosted by the presence of Rowan Varty and Mark Wright for the first time this season, left today (Thursday) for Kota Kinabalu for the second leg of the Asian Sevens Series.
“With both Mark and Rowan back in the team, we have the core of the Asian Games squad with us and it is important that we perform,’ said Hong Kong National Head Coach Dai Rees. “Our goal will be to finish the weekend unbeaten and win the tournament.”
“They have fitted in perfectly with the rest and will add a bit to the side. It is crucial that now we have them, we get into a winning mode for our goal is the gold medal in Guangzhou,” Rees said.
Hong Kong is drawn with South Korea and the Philippines in the preliminary round on the opening day on Saturday.
“Our goal is to win our group, and remain unbeaten in the competition. We have only lost to Japan this season and it is crucial that we overcome that hurdle,” Rees said.
Despite all the excitement over the Bledisloe Cup, Rees revealed the players were totally focused on the job at hand – building momentum going into the Asian Games.
“The players are not even disappointed that they are missing the Bledisloe Cup. For them the focus is all on winning that gold medal in Guangzhou,” Rees added.
