This weekend (Oct 29-31) will once again sees Bangkok a haven for elite level sides at the International Sevens at Chan Stadium.
Grammar-Carlton are returning for their fifth Bangkok Sevens campaign to defend their 2008 & 2009 Cup titles and make it three in a row.
If the club is successful it will be only the second time in the history of the Bangkok Sevens. Fijian wizards Davetalevu were first to achieve this feat between 1996-1998.
A second Kiwi outfit, the powerful Pacific Warriors, will push Grammar-Carlton all the way as will last year's Lloyd McDermott side which this year will be called the Kamilaroi Young Guns.
The indigenous squad Kamilaroi will be joined by the Nari Nari Magpies with South Africa represented through Macassar RFC.
Local and home interest will come from Bangkok-based Baker Tilly and the Jabulani Social Club.
Thailand will also be well represented with strong teams from the Thai Navy, Chiang Mai Suas, Mahasarakham and Thonburi Universities, Thai Barbarians, Bangkok Goosers, the Old Bangkok Bangers, Thai Barbarians, and the second Macassar side the Macathai 7s.
The senior side is a very accomplished outfit that was narrowly beaten in an exciting semi-final last year by Grammar-Carlton.
Surprise entry the expatriate Chachlik 7s from Turkmenistan will be joined by Central Asian neighbours Olimp from Kazakhstan and by the strong, well drilled Singapore CC 7s which together will form a trio of Asian internationals who will be keen to make a mark during the men’s two-day.
The Beaumont Partnership Women’s Sevens commencing on Friday 29th will include an Aussie indigenous team, the Murri Magic, to compete against regular Thai sides Bangkok IPE, Yala Army and Mahasarakham, Sri Nakarin and Burapha Universities.
The tournament is sponsored by The Londoner Pub, well known construction company Lincolne Scott with Tenderloins providing top-class catering throughout the weekend. The BNH Hospital will attend to any player injuries during the weekend, and the organisers are indebted to the Tourism Authority of Thailand for their support to ensure this event continues as it has for the past 16 years.
Attendance is free and the stadium stand will be reserved for spectators, VIPs and tournament sponsors, so elevated seating and friendly service will be the tone for those joining in this rugby fest.
The Women's Sevens will kick off on Friday afternoon, at 12.00 noon while the Men's competition will start at 08.30 until 17.30 on Saturday and Sunday, 30/31 October.
