Brisbane Fiji Nadi Navosa were the pick of the 32 sides out for 21st Byron Bay Sevens in Australia at the weekend.
The Side with a heavy South Sea influence swept past the Lennox Head Trojans, a talented local side, 38-26 in the final of the two-day event.
Chaotic weather preceded the annual tournament at the weekend with several tents and marquees blown away and destroyed on the eve of the event.
The Trojans, led by standouts Jeff Wilson, Harry Witt and AJ Gilbert, met Warwick Bombers in the semi-final which went down to the wire, with the Lennox Head team winning a golden-point extra-time thriller 24-19.
Brisbane Fiji took charge early in the weekend’s finale heading into half-time with a slim 14-7 lead.
The Trojans lost Junior Waratah Harry Bennett early in the second half with a shoulder injury and were forced to reshuffle, which didn’t help their cause as the Brisbane-based side dominated the second period to grab the title.
In other men’s finals, Island Breeze Brisbane were too strong in the Pool B grade for the Gold Coast Breakers 26-15, while in Pool C, West Subiaco had a comfortable 24-0 win over the Busted Eagles Icons.
It was a thrilling finale in Pool D with the Townsville Barbarians prevailing 21-17 over the Sloths.
New champs
There has been a changing of the guard in the women’s division, with three-time defending premiers Brisbane Eastsyde defeated by the combined New Zealand and United States team KUSA 19-14.
It was thought KUSA would win the title comfortably but Eastsyde pushed them in a competitive encounter.
Gold Coast’s Nerang Bulls were too strong for Snow Whites in the women’s Pool B, winning 24-0.

The name of the side that actually won the whole comp is Brisbane Nadroga/Navosa...they're a bunch of our local brizzy boys who wanted to represent their province. Proud of the boys for stepping it up and playing some awesome rugby.

After all these years being loyal and supporting the Gold Coast 7's, you have now decided not to include
Reply | Report this Post"Brisbane Fiji "for the first time.
It's very sad reading up on all the new teams for 2010 and no "Brisbane Fiji."
Good Luck and hope all goes well.
cheers
