New Zealand produced a come-from-behind performance to win their fourth Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens gold medal in Delhi.
Trailing arch-rivals Australia 17-7 the introduction of Sherwin Stowers and Tim Mikkelson paid off for veteran coach Gordon Tietjens.
Stowers scored from a Kurt Baker chip kick and later repaid the compliment when he beat Lachie Turner, sprinted 50 metres and put Baker in for the final score.
Captain DJ Forbes had earlier scored a critical try to give New Zealand the lead 19-17.
Tietjens now has coached the team to a remarkable four golds, as well as eight World Sevens Series and a Rugby World Cup Sevens.
"Sherwin Stowers gave us the break and to have Kurt Baker in support was awesome," he said of the final moments. "Sherwin was pretty fresh and having that depth on our bench really paid off.
"All the guys have trained the house down and to win a gold medal at the end of it was worth it."
Vanquished coach Michael O'Connor paid tribute to the men in black.
"We were right in it but New Zealand were too good in the end - Stowers has jet shoes. You come in wanting to win gold but we'll take silver."
Australia held the lead from late in the first half after tries to the speed twins Lachie Turner and Luke Morahan.
James Stannard extended the lead after a great break from Kimami Sitauti but the inspired substitutions saw the Kiwis home in an epic battle.
South Africa won the bronze 17-14 over England in another tight tussle.
England dominated after an early score to Bernardo Botha, with South African-born Mat Turner and Dan Caprice among the scorers.
Cecil Afrika narrowed the gap with a chip-and-chase try followed by his own conversion, and when Luba Mtembu went over in the corner South Africa had one hand on the medal.
England couldn't convert a last-minute opportunity and coach Ben Ryan said they probably should have shifted the ball wide at the end.
"That's the way Sevens goes and we have no regrets. We'll leave Delhi frustrated but come Edinburgh next year hopefully we will be lifting the World Series title."
Samoa were too strong for Scotland winning the Plate 34-0 with two tries each to IRB Sevens Player of the Year Mikaele Pesamino and Afa Aiono.
Papua New Guinea speedster Albert Levi also crossed twice as they beat Canada 17-10 to win the Bowl, with Levi calling the feeling "amazing".
"The celebrations back home will be incredible."
Coach Shane Howarth, a former All Black and Wales international, said he was very pleased for his team.
"They are a great bunch of lads and they deserve it," Howarth said. "Hopefully the pictures of the guys winning will get through to home and make them realise they really mean business."
