The age-old Trans-Tasman rivalry will decide the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens with New Zealand to face Australia in the final.

New Zealand captain DJ Forbes scored twice to give his side a 12-0 halftime lead against England and they went to 19-0 when Tomasi Cama scampered over after a poor England pass led to a scrum.

Fellow Fijian native Isoa Damudamu got England on the scoreboard before two more tries, to Lote Raikabula and Cama, saw New Zealand seal a place in the final and the opportunity for a fourth gold medal.

Cama was delighted with his two tries.

"We saw they didn't have a sweeper sometimes so it was good to take the opportunity and chip over for my second. The boys did the hard work so I'll take the opportuity."

The playmaker, who missed Melbourne four years ago with injury, said the team was pleased to come through the match.

"We stuck to our game plan and our fast players out wide also managed to finish for us.

"There's one match to go so we're looking forward to the final."

England coach Ben Ryan lamented his team's lack of execution and promised better in the bronze medal match.

"We came for the gold and we made our own mistakes but we still want to win a medal."

Australia came back from 0-7 down against South Africa to win 17-7. Lachie Turner, Liam Gill and James Stannard scored for the victors with Ryno Benjamin getting the opening score for South Africa.

Turner said attention now turns to the final.

"No Australian team has played off for a gold so we are pleased about that, but that's history now. New Zealand look very impressive and very physical. We need to hit the breakdowns hard and match it with them there."

With a semi-final win in Edinburgh in June breaking an eight year drought against the Kiwis, Turner said his team is up for the final.

"All the guys have worked so hard, they will be ready and they will be firing."

Earlier, Papua New Guinea gave the crowd plenty of reasons to make noise, running in several long-range tries as they beat Tonga 24-5 and Canada beat Uganda 22-17.

Samoa bounced back from their narrow loss to England to defeat Wales 38-12 after leading 12-5 at half-time. The two teams had met at exactly the same stage in Melbourne 2006 with Wales winning 26-17.

However, today the Samoans showed glimpses of their previous form running in six tries.

Scotland beat Kenya for the first time in six matches in a sudden-death thriller.

The lead changed several times before Kenyan captain Humphrey Kayange, who continued his record of scoring in every match, levelled the match to force extra time. Sydney Ashioya also crossed for Kenya.

As ever there was a vocal Kenyan contingent cheering on their heroes but it wasn't enough as Lee Jones sprinted the length of the field to send the Celts into their first Commonwealth Games final.
