Bombers claim big prize at Central Coast

Tuesday 12 October 2010 (UR7s)

The 2010 Fitness First Central Coast Sevens lived up to its motto of 'Rugby at its Electrifying Best' on Saturday with magnificent displays of sevens rugby played in overcast conditions with slight drizzle at Morrie Breen Oval, Kanwal.

The conditions didn't stop the intensity or flair on the field with some massive collisions and end to end tries being scored.

The tournament was opened with an official Indigenous Smoking Ceremony performed by Kevin Duncan with local member of Parliament David Harris Blowing time on for the first round match between the NSW Waratahs and Indigenous Young Guns.

The women’s event saw some great rugby being played with a repeat of the 2009 final with last years champions Sydney University up against the Kristy Giteau lead Tuggeranong Vikings team, this year the Vikings turned the tables on last years champions taking the 2010 title in emphatic style running out winners 40-12.
In the men’s tournament the NSW Waratahs Academy & Sydney Uni were hot title favourites and started strongly.

NSW eventually relegated Uni to the plate division advancing through to the semi finals of the Cup.

The powerful Tuggeranong Vikings from the ACT were unfortunate losing a couple of close matches relegating them to the Ball division with Australian 7s Star and former Coast local Jesse Parahi performing strongly for the Vikings before being injured. Sydney Premier Club the Parramatta Two Blues advanced to the final to meet the Vikings in the Ball Division Grand Final with the Vikings winning a close but high scoring match 47-31 to be the Ball Division Champions for 2010.

The Boost Juice Plate Division saw the David Campese led Sydney Premiership Team Sydney Uni take on the Impact Rugby Team featuring former NRL players Matt Geyer, Jamie Feeney, Michael Buettner & Cliffy Lyons along with a number of Warringah Rugby Club players including speedster Dave Feltscheer. Age and lack of Rugby experience was against the Impact Team up against one of Australia's best club sides in Uni however Impact did as their names suggested and made an immediate Impact on the students racing away with a 50-19 victory in an upset win to claim the Plate Championship.

The Cup saw the Te Whanau Team featuring former Cook Islands Commonwealth Games player Stevie Berryman take on the local Central Coast Waves team.

Te Whanau proved too powerful defeating the Waves to advance to the final. In the other semi the NSW Waratahs came up against the Bombers from Queensland, the Bombers travelled 14 hours by bus to make the tournament and made early impressions.

The semi against the Tahs was first class with a nail biting finish with the Bombers advancing with a 26-24 victory after the Tahs missed a conversion on full time to level the scores.

The final was magnificent with Te Whanau up against the Bombers. The Bombers made up of primarily Fijian players with have national experience had been the stand out team of the tournament. The physicality of the match was amazing with some massive hits, powerful running and end to end ball movement.

Errors proved costly for Te Whanau who fell behind but made a spirited come back getting within reach of victory with a minute remaining.

Te Whanau made a play for the Bombers try line but a drop ball proved costly with the Bombers scooping up the ball and racing away with a member of the Te Whanau team in hot pursuit, the striding Bombers player turned hitting the Te Whanua defender with a powerful fend that stopped the tackler in his tracks allowing the Bombers to score a runaway try from their own score-line to clinch victory 24-14 in what was a highly intense and physical match worthy of the championship final.
