MEDAL QUARTER FINALS

Samoa 5 England 7
Kenya 5 Australia 27
Scotland 7 South Africa 10
A mouth-watering day awaits on the second day of the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens.

The main course sees all eight seeds in action, although results late on Day One have thrown up two unexpected scenarios in the quarter-finals.

First up is New Zealand, who are undefeated in all four Commonwealth Games to date, and should have too much firepower for Wales. The two sides met at the same stage in Manchester 2002, with New Zealand winning 24-0, and their head-to-head record in major tournaments is 22 wins to New Zealand and two to Wales.

However the Kiwis, with newly clean-shaven DJ Forbes leading the way, will not have forgotten that one of those defeats was in the RWC Sevens in Dubai 18 months ago, a tournament that Wales went on to win.

The second and third quarters both have the potential to be classics.

Silver medalists from Melbourne 2006, England, would have anticipated a clash with Kenya. But the Africans' hard-fought 12-10 over Samoa last night instead sees a rematch of the Melbourne quarter, with England taking on the IRB Sevens champions Samoa.

And Samoa have the edge on their opponents in recent times, winning six of the last seven knockout matches between them, including at the RWC Sevens in 2009.

The teams have met 46 times with England ahead 24 to 21 (with one tie). On yesterday's form, expect England to get up for this game and go through to face New Zealand in the top half of the draw.

Kenya, who are playing in their first Commonwealth Games quarter final, have nothing to lose against Australia, the bronze medalist in 1998. They defeated the same opponent 24-12 in their first and only quarter-final clash in George in 2009, though in all matches Australia lead the series 12 matches to 7.

Kenyan coach Ben Ayimba warned of a "wounded" Australia and Michael O'Connor's young side - with 11 players aged 24 or under - should go through to the last four.

There they are likely to meet second seed South Africa who play Scotland, another team in their first Commonwealth Games quarter-final. The Boks have only lost twice to Scotland in 24 outings, albeit their most recent match in May resulted in a 19-14 win to the Scots at their home tournament.

With a good blend of youth and experience it is hard to go past South Africa who are looking to improve upon their bronze medal at Manchester 2002.

Earlier this morning Canada, Uganda, Papua New Guinea and Tonga proceeded to the Bowl semi-finals before the Medal matches get underway in temperatures of 25 degrees plus.

This feast of Rugby Sevens, to be staged in the presence of HRH Prince Edward, sets up a thrilling final day in Delhi.
