A surprise result in the final match of Day One of the Commonwealth Games has set up an intriguing medal round tomorrow.
Kenya snatched a 12-10 win over IRB Sevens champions Samoa when captain Humphrey Kayange crashed over in the corner. Brother Collins Injera also scored in their first win over Samoa since May 2009.
The reward is a quarter-final against Australia who ended second in Pool D after a thriller against England, who now face Samoa. New Zealand play Wales and South Africa take on Scotland in the other quarter-finals.
Three of the top seeds - New Zealand, Samoa and England - are in the one half of the draw, meaning at least one of them will miss out on the chance to play off for the medals.
The match of the day was undoubtedly England against Australia which finished 21-19 with only a Ben Gollings conversion separating the teams.
Dan Caprice scored twice and Mat Turner once for England as the game ebbed and flowed. A 7-0 half time lead for Australia was clawed back by the men in white, with the match twice tied at 7-7 and 14-14.
England only took the lead with Caprice's second and Gollings' sideline conversion. A late try to Australia's Pat McCutcheon, following earlier scores to Bernard Foley and Lachie Turner, was not converted by their skipper James Stannard.
However Australia would have still finished second on points difference if the match was tied, after their earlier victories against Uganda (33-0) and Sri Lanka (42-5) were less than England's 55-0 and 59-7 margins over the same opponents.
New Zealand rounded off their challenge for a fourth gold medal with a 46-0 drubbing of Scotland. The Kiwis earlier beat Canada 43-7 and Guyana 52-0 and expect to have Tim Mikkelson fully recovered by tomorrow after a knee injury.
South Africa, the second seed, did enough to beat Wales 21-5 after earlier wins over Tonga 29-0 and India 59-0.
Both Uganda and Papua New Guinea with their speed merchants look likely to give established Sevens teams Canada and Tonga a challenge for the Bowl.
And India delighted their home fans with a 5-38 loss to Tonga, albeit which could have been 12-17 at one point had a questionable forward pass not been ruled.
They play first up tomorrow against Canada on what promises to be another hot day of competition in Delhi.
