The top seeds remained undefeated from the first round of matches at the Commonwealth Games Sevens during a steaming afternoon in Delhi.

South Africa impressed against the home team with a 59-0 victory while New Zealand, resting several key players, ran in eight tries over Guyana 52-0 and England gave Uganda a 55-0 lesson.

Samoa piled on nine tries to defeat Malaysia 61-0 but Australia, who were up 35-0 at halftime against Sri Lanka, loosened in the second half to win 42-5.

The big match of Day One is England against Australia and England's Chris Cracknell said he was looking forward to the clash, the fourth time in history the teams have met at the Commonwealth Games.

"That's our next agenda and they're a good side. We're in good shape but we need to forget about what we've done and move on to the next thing.

Cracknell, who last played for England at George in late 2009, said it was good to be back.

"It's a great part of doing the job - you get to go somewhere warm," joked the 26 year-old. "It's been a bit difficult after nine months off the circuit, but I'm getting there!"

Earlier, South African coach Paul Treu said the India match was a much-improved performance on the Tongan victory.

"It was a solid team performance. Individuals aren't going to make it for you, we are looking for guys who can play as a team."

Treu admitted it had been disruptive having five players making their international debut .

"We came into this tournament not really knowing what to expect and had to start the new players against Tonga, instead of off the bench, and they passed the test. However, I see great opportunity for these guys, who have to start somewhere. There are more tournaments to come and these players have an opportunity to step up to international sevens.

The Kiwis left DJ Forbes, Tomasi Cama and Lote Raikabula on the bench against the Caribbean champions, and Sherwin Stowers (three tries) and Toby Arnold (two) led the scoring.

Liam Messam, already with a gold medal from Melbourne 2006, said it was one game at a time for the men in black.

"We're just worried about Scotland," he said. "We can't look too far ahead of ourselves."

Mat Turner (England) and Afa Aiono (Samoa) also grabbed hat-tricks in the afternoon session.

The closest match to date saw Scotland hold off Canada 19-17. Lee Jones' brace and one to Melbourne veteran Andrew Turnbull were enough to edge out the North Americans, whose late try to Sean Duke was too wide for Phil Mack to level the scores.

"It was always going to be close and a tough game and it was one we targeted," said Jones, the tournament's leading tryscorer with five. "Now that we have the quarter final spot sealed we can focus on New Zealand and give it a good crack.

"The boys have worked hard in training and putting me into the space to score the tries. It doesn't matter who gets them, it's the win that is important."

Papua New Guinea also pushed Kenya close before coming up short 12-17.

The last round of matches is Tonga v India, Canada v Guyana, Sri Lanka v Uganda, Papua New Guinea v Malaysia, South Africa v Wales, New Zealand v Scotland, England v Australia and Samoa v Kenya.
