CWG Sevens - Pools Round 1

Monday 11 October 2010 (UR7s)

The favourites all recorded big wins in the opening session of the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens.

New Zealand had too much pace for Canada, winning 42-7, while England thrashed Sri Lanka 59-7. James Rodwell, with three tries, and Ben Gollings and Kevin Barrett, with two each, led the scoring for the 2006 silver medalists.

Australia blanked Uganda 33-0, with two tries to Lachie Turner on debut, and Samoa, although they conceded three tries, ran out winners 38-17 over Papua New Guinea.

Yellow cards to Liam Messam and Tomasi Cama marred the victory for the three-time gold medal winners New Zealand.

"There's a few odds against us just because we are New Zealand so the refs have a tendency for details," claimed New Zealand skipper DJ Forbes.

Earlier, South Africa scored five tries, including two to Paul Delport, to beat Tonga 29-0 while other winners were Wales, Scotland and Kenya.

Tom Prydie scored twice on debut to help Wales to a 56-7 win over host nation India and Guyana held Scotland to 0-7 at halftime before three tries to Selkirk winger Lee Jones sealed a 26-0 victory.

Kenya beat Malaysia 40-0 with Collins Injera and Horace Otieno bagging doubles.

In front of a good Day One crowd Indian captain Nasser Hussain was pleased to finally be underway.

"It was fantastic to hear the cheers from the crowd supporting us even when we were down," he said.

The team, making their debut at a Commonwealth Games, know they have plenty to improve on before facing Tonga and South Africa, but were making the most of their moment in the Delhi sunshine.

"We need to work on our defence, by committing a couple of people in the tackle left us short out wide. Overall we took it to them and I am so proud of the guys."

Another first-timer is Caribbean champion Guyana. Captain Claudius Butts said the team is thrilled to be in Delhi.

"It's a wonderful experience both in the village and playing here in front of a large crowd. The crowd always goes for an underdog so it's good for us!"

Wallaby winger Turner is also enjoying the support, particularly from fellow Australian athletes, and the Commonwealth Games environment.

"We've been out to see a couple of events and there's a few here returning the favour. it's nice to see that green and gold in the stands.

"To be in the village is unreal, especially coming from an athletics background. When I chose rugby I never thought I would get to something like this."

The 23 year-old, who has 11 caps, was glad to have the first Sevens match at this level under his belt.

"It was good to get a few nerves out of the way and we will learn a few things from that game. I probably should have thrown the inside ball on my second try. As a team we took a few things out of that game."

The glorious Delhi weather has hit 31 degrees and the colourful crowd are showing tremendous enthusiasm, especially for their local heroes.

Upcoming matches are South Africa v India, Wales v Tonga, New Zealand v Guyana and Scotland v Canada.

Thank you! You are the only website giving up to date scores for all Rugby 7's matches. I'm a POHM in Aus and not getting any England coverage is frustrating!! Australia, there are other teams taking part, a well rounded portrayal would be greatly appreciated.

I echo your sentiments SallyAnn.

I'm following the scores from a bookmaker in England, Willhill. Unfortunately they don't update the final scores so I go here to find what they are.

Keep up the good work, Nick!

well I think so Fiji is not in the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, it makes it easier for New Zealand to clinch there fourth Gold medal…but would wish the other teams all the best.

The Commonwealth Games coverage is truly dire. I can't watch or find live results for the 7s anywhere. Not on network TV, no on cable, not even on the internet (except UR7s). What century are these people living in?

Hi Aussie Gold, I think Australia have done brilliantly. When I lived in England they did cover all the competition not just England. I'm all for biggin' up the home team but it would be good to have other peoples contributions recognised.

I love rugby and appreciate watching whoever is playing. Having said that. CUMMON' ENGLAND!

Well I guess we're lucky here in NZ, we had 6 channels showing every Commonwealth Games event live including every single Sevens match. We also had betting options on every match at NZ TAB. NZ win gold 4 in a row!! WOOHOO!!! I love NZ!!
