more »Sevens scoreboard collapses in Delhi
The organisers of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi have received another blow after a large temporary scoreboard collapsed at Delhi University - the venue for the rugby sevens competition.
Nobody was injured when a scoreboard crashed to the ground at the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens venue this afternoon, in the latest incident to mar the Games.
A chain support reportedly gave way at one corner of the massive temporary scoreboard, sending the left-hand side pivoting downward, smashing the bottom left of the screen into the ground and the bottom right into the iron support frame.
The installation of the scoreboard, which was delayed after concerns about whether it would be waterproof, was only raised into position two days ago and technicians from Swiss Timing, who will be using the scoreboard for information and results, had only just managed to get it connected.
Rugby sevens competition manager Kevin Culliver said it was lucky the incident "happened when no spectators were around" at the Delhi University complex, which will host the event on Monday and Tuesday.
One technician, who declined to be named, said that discussions had taken place on what could be done ahead of the opening of the competition, in which 16 teams, including England, Scotland and Wales, will take part.
It is not the first scoreboard malfunction to afflict the Games, which have been criticised for their poor facilities and lack of preparation.
On Tuesday the women's 53kg weightlifting competition was delayed after a brief power outage caused the screen to go blank.
