Injuries to captain Kyle Brown and scrum-half Branco du Preez have forced South Africa coach Paul Treu into late changes ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Replacing the pair will veteran forward Marius Schoeman and former national captain Paul Delport who both led National Sevens Series winners Samurai International to further success at Twickenham’s Middlesex Sevens in August.
The Platinum International Sevens tournament in Rustenburg will provide South Africa with with one final opportunity to hone its preparations ahead of one of Sevens’ major showpieces.
Apart from South Africa, the other international teams competing in Rustenburg will be Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana and coach Treu will use the opportunity to improve on certain technical aspects of their game.
"We gave some encouraging steps last week in Middelburg, but we now need to improve on our tactical approach and our overall game structure," said Treu.
"I am delighted we will have a degree of strong competition because I want to gauge the readiness of the squad and it will also give us an opportunity to look more closely at the newcomers."
The Springbok Sevens squad for the Commonwealth Games: Marius Schoeman, Boom Prinsloo, Chris Dry, Chase Minnaar, Lubabalo Mtembu, Cecil Afrika, Renfred Dazel, Paul Delport, Ryno Benjamin, Sibusiso Sithole, Bernardo Botha, MJ Mentz.
