Kenya stars Humphrey Kayange and Collins Injera warmed up for the Commonwealth Games by inspiring Mwamba RFC to their third successive triumph on Western Union National Sevens Circuit this season.
Yet again the club met Kenya Harlequin FC in the final at the George Mwangi Kabeberi Memorial Sevens, this time coming through 28-14.
Mwamba dominated the early exchanges and were rewarded when Injera touched down early on with Lavin Asego converting for a 7-0 lead.
Their domination continued in the first period but they had to contend with some dogged resistance from Quins. But moments later it was Kayange taking out Patrice Agunda and offloading to younger brother Injera to extend the lead to 14-0.
Quins started edging back into the game, making their way into Mwamba territory with Victor Sudi eventually touching down and Sidney Ashioya converting for 14-7 at half-time.
The second half saw Kayange score the first of his two tries with Asego converting, 21-7 to Mwamba. This spurred Quins onto the offensive, pinning back Mwamba as Ashioya crossed the whitewash. His conversion made this game a seven pointer, 21-14 to the black shirts and with all to play for.
But it was the Series leaders who dealt the latest and most significant blow as Asego retrieved the ensuing Quins kick off and danced his way past two defenders before offloading to Kayange who cantered 60m to score under the posts, with a conversion pushing the score to 28-14.
A late Quins rally was not enough and the final whistle soon went, cementing Mwamba's position at the top of the log on 118 points as the sides head into next weekend's Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.
Nondies win the plate
Nondescript RUFC crowned a fine weekend by claiming the Kabeberi Plate courtesy of a 24-21 win over Nakuru RFC in another thrilling final. Tournament MVP Charles Kanyi grabbing a brace with Ben Nyambu and Biko Adema each touching down. Nakuru scored through Ben Chirchir, Edwin Makori and Larry Safari.
