North Carolina State edged past University of North Carolina (24-12) in Sunday’ final at the two-day Atlantic Coast Invitational 7s (ACI).

The ACI was switched to a sevens competitions this year and was sponsored and supported by the USA 7s LLC.

North Carolina came through the pool stages as top seeds going on to meet George Tech in the last-eight – beating them also by a 24-12 scoreline.

Virginia Tech were expected to pose the eventual winners a serious threat in the semi-finals and so it proved with North Carolina having to graft for a 17-10 victory.

North Carolina’s physical approach was very much in evidence in the weekend’s finale. A dominant set-piece saw them gain the upper hand and overall win through tries to Bryan Maxwell, Craig Denker, Phillip Burcal and Greg Hesler. Will Teague was the tournament’s deserved MVP.

In the Challenger Final, Clemson, who went winless on day one, can take confidence from a resurgent display in beating Wake Forest 24-17.
