Hosts India will relish the opportunity to mix it with the best in the world at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi (11-12 October).
The national side, captained by Nasser Hussain, will battle it out with IRB Sevens powerhouses South Africa, Wales and Tonga in the group stages of the two-day showpiece.
India have just returned from last weekend’s Shanghai Sevens, the first leg of the IRB Asian Series, where they were knocked out in the Cup quarter-finals by Malaysia.
With the Asian Games following on from the Commonwealth’s in November it is set to be a busy but hugely exciting time for India. Skipper Hussian is not overawed by the prospect of facing the world’s premier sevens nations in the coming weeks.
"The top 10 Rugby teams of the world are from Commonwealth countries. So the field is really going to be strong. But we are ready for the challenges and looking for some great rugby action in front of the home crowd,” Hussain told PTI.
"Wales and South Africa are formidable sides and it would be quite a herculean task to beat them. But we expect to beat Tonga.
"(The) Commonwealth Games will bring the best out of all of us. Teams like New Zealand, South Africa, England and others have superior understanding of the game and that shows in their rankings. We all know as a team that there is still a long way to go for us. But we are looking forward to test ourselves against the best in the world. Who knows we can (maybe) have an upset or two."
The team has kept busy during the last six months in preparation for what lies ahead. They attended a training camp in New Zealand in April and in August they undertook a European tour saw them win both the Istanbul 7s in Turkey and the Bee's International 7s in England.
"Recent title triumphs in Istanbul and England have boosted our confidence and we know we are improving as individuals and as a unit. We are still learning and the Games will give a big platform for us to learn more,” added Hussain.
