SA Schools battle for @lantic Sevens glory

Tuesday 7 September 2010 (UR7s)

South Africa’s @lantic Sevens series is gathering momentum with Grey High winning the latest leg of the schools competition.

Grey’s win sees them qualify for the ‘Champion of Champions’ tournament to be held in Rustenberg from November 4-5 – an event which sees the winning teams from the 15 qualifiers compete for the overall SA Schools @lantic Sevens title.

The title sponsors @lantic are the largest independent consumer Internet Service Providers (ISP) in South Africa.

Grey High faced the only other unbeaten side on Saturday’s final, hosts Daniel Pienaar School, in what was meant to be tight contest. Both teams were the class acts on show in Uitenhage, totally dominating throughout the day.

However, Grey showed their true class and played superb clinical sevens to surge past their opponents by five tries to one, winning 31-7.

Grey didn’t have it all their own way in their semi-final clash with Framesby. Despite racing to a 24-5, Framesby managed to reduce the deficit when Grey were reduced to six players after receiving a yellow card for a dangerous tackle.

But the eventual winners held on for a 24-19 win to progress to the tournament finale.

In the group stages Grey were in flying form against Bertsig (65-5), John Walton (40-0) and Despatch (40-26).
Elsewhere, Bergsig edged Volkskool (24 – 19) for the Shield, John Walton were too good for Kirkwood in the Bowl (26-12) with Despatch victorious in the Plate against Wonderbroom (28-10).

The twelfth tournament in this year's @lantic series takes place on Saturday at HS Kempton Park with the likes of Waterkloof, HTS Middelburg and Monnas in action.
