New Zealand Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens believes the Commonwealth Games is the perfect stage for four former All Blacks to re-launch their international careers.
The Kiwis, three-time Commonwealth gold medallists, have just completed a two-day training camp as preparations continue for the Delhi Games in October (11-12).
Tietjens told the ONE News on New Zealand television, the campaign could help the likes Zac Guildford, Ben Smith, Adam Thomson and Hosea Gear get back into the All Blacks for the World Cup.
"(They) all have that natural ability and probably relied a lot on that, but now they've got to get out and also apply themselves with a lot of hard work and they're doing that," Tietjens says.
Flanker Adam Thomson had been a regular All Black for the past two years up till this season’s Tri-Nations. He was initially named in the squad for the June Tests against Ireland and Wales, but has since seen Jerome Kaino, Victor Vito and Liam Messam preferred for national honours.
"For me, it's not about running away, it's about turning up doing the work, working on those goals that I've been told to work on," Thomson said.
"My major work on now is getting my hands on the ball again, getting out there and being a ball runner.”
Tietjens, who guided his side to second place on the 09/10 IRB Sevens World Series, sat nervously last weekend as many of his stars played for their respective provinces in the ITM Cup.
But despite having all the representatives from his squad playing they came through unscathed much to the legendary coach’s relief.
"It is a real concern because there's fourteen players named. One of those players is injured at the moment; but he's on standby, Solomon King. But it is a concern week after week, but they've got to play."
"They need game time, you can't wrap them up in cotton wool," Tietjens said.
New Zealand will head to Dubai in the build-up to Delhi for some warm weather acclimatisation.
