Maik Kwambo & UR7s staff
Kisumu RFC will be one of the leading contenders at this Saturday’s Kenya Harlequin Christie Sevens, the first leg of the Western Union National Sevens Circuit.
They will fancy their chances of making a main cup semi final appearance after being grouped in a relatively friendly Pool B alongside tournament defending champions Kenya Harlequin FC, Blak Blad and Daystar University.
The team, which has been undergoing rigorous training at the Kisumu Polytechnic ahead of their Nairobi adventure, do however carry some injury concerns.
Dependable campaigners such as Peter Okong'o, Elvin Okong'o,Ted Ahono-Obadha and Frank Okello'swrist are still nursing injuries sustained during the end of the regular 15-a-side season.
They do welcome back Jacob Ojeem who has recovered from a broken finger, and David Watako who returns after a long spell on the sidelines following knee surgery.
Kisumu RFC's Secretary Paul Dan Okong'o says, "The injuries give an opening to the likes of flyer David Odhiambo, Kevin Mzee, skipper Dick Osano and new players to make the team, and probably a name for themselves."
Dala Sevens
The club also plays host to the third leg of this year’s circuit at the Dala Sevens (4-5 September).
"Preparations for the Dala sevens have reached level three ,and the Lakeside City is looking forward to welcoming the rest of the country to a huge festival of rugby both on and off the pitch,” added Okong’o.
“Kisumu will host a 24 team event like last year and this should give players an opportunity to showcase talent.
"They will be in a position to mix it with members of the National Sevens team, turning out for Club Sides. This will be an opportunity for fans to see some of these players live and in colour and also get a few autographs."
