Seattle-based Old Puget Sound Beach (OPSB) stormed to victory at the USA Sevens National Club Championship in San Francisco.
Facing leading lights and defending champions Belmont Shore in the tournament’s final, OPSB’s Fijian influence was very much in evidence as they built an unassailable lead in Treasure Island, winning 26-17.
Two tries apiece to Fili Botitue and Nu'u Punimata proved enough with livewire Isi Daveta a constant threat.
USA Sevens stalwart Matt Hawkins replied with a brace for Shore but OPSB weren’t to be denied, pressurising their all-star opposition with some rock solid defence throughout to clinch a title they last won back in 1992.
Shore had earlier seen of Gentlemen of Aspen with ease in the semi-finals (26-0), starving the West powerhouse of the ball to book their final spot. OPSB meanwhile had to graft hard against the dangerous Denver Barbarians, coming from behind to eventually win 14-10. Aspen grabbed third sport in a later play-off with their regional rivals Denver.
OPSB’s shock quarter-final win against Chicago Lions had set them on their way to success.
NOVA again faced disappointment at Nationals knocked out by Denver in their last-eight clash. It proved a rollercoaster tie with NOVA coming back from three tries down to cut the deficit to just 21-19. But Garrett Peterson’s late effort for the Barbos proved a killer blow to NOVA who took some minor satisfaction from an eventual victory in the Plate.
Atlanta Old White pressed Aspen all the way in their quarter-final clash but went down 10-12 with Shore clinical in a 19-5 victory over the students from Life University.
