Samurai dominate at Cwmtawe Sevens

Monday 9 August 2010 (UR7s)

THE Samurai won the Cwmtawe Sevens tournament for the fourth time after a 36-17 final win against Tonmawr in Pontardawe on Saturday. They walked away with a hefty winners cheque to show for their efforts, while Tonmawr pocketed £1,500 to bolster club funds.

It was a well-deserved victory for the talented Samurai outfit, who were outstanding favourites to claim the title on the back of their victory in the recent National Sevens Series.

Tonmawr showed resilience in the final but couldn’t match the skill and instinctive finishing of the Samurai. Humphrey Keyange and Mark Odejobi and shot the Samurai into a 12-0 lead before the local side replied with a touchdown from Steffan Andrews.

Tries from Collins Injera and another for Odejobi made the second half a tough mountain to climb for the Welsh side. Neville Edwards crossed and converted, with Kevin James following suit but two tries from Keyange clinched victory for the side packed full of IRB World Sevens stars.

Samurai had previously won the competition, which celebrated its 28th year, in 1998, 2001 and 2004.

Young Ospreys, Leeds Carnegie University, Ponty Butchers and Swansea were the other sides to top their pools and qualify for the quarter-finals.

In the Plate competition, Carmarthen Warriors defeated Glantâf Goats 41-24 in an entertaining final.

Cwmllynfell won the Shield event, claiming a £500 winners' cheque after beating Brynaman 25-7 in the Final.
