Kenyan stars head to Cwmtawe Sevens

Friday 6 August 2010 (UR7s)

A high-class field will assemble tomorrow (Saturday) at Wales’ most high profile tournament – the Cwmtawe Sevens.

The tournament, forced to be abandoned last year because of wet weather, has attracted 24 teams to Parc Ynysderw, Pontardawe.

Two of the most high profile names in Kenyan rugby, brothers Humphrey Kayange and Collins Injera, make a return to what is a star-studded Samurai International outfit.

They join the likes Randall Kamea (Fiji) and veteran Marius Schoeman (South Africa) in a side that will be coached by Phil Greening.

Samurai, winners of this summer’s UK National Sevens Series and five-time winners at Cwmtawe, will also field an all-Welsh team in memory of former Wales coach Colin Hillman who died last year after a long battle with cancer.

The Colin Hillman Samurai Memorial 7 will be coached by Assistant Wales sevens coach Gareth Williams and captained by Nick Wakely.

"Colin was my best friend and a fantastic coach, he was instrumental in so many players' careers, with Nick and Gareth being no exception,” said Samurai founder Terry Sands.

“I’m sure Colin will be looking down on this team providing his usual input and hopefully that will lead to an excellent performance by the team.

“The plan is for us to look at all players from both teams and then pick a quality side for Middlesex (August 14).”

Local threats will primarily come from Swansea, Llanelli and the Young Ospreys who will be coached by Gruff Rees.

Tonmawr (Welsh Wizards) winners of the tournament in 2005 and pipped by the British Army in 2007, include World Cup winner Tal Selley, Luke Richards and Jamie Donovan in their ranks.

The White Marauders are another side preparing for the Middlesex Sevens and can be expected to make the latter stages with the promising Kamikaze also crossing the border from England.

Overseas sides to watch are Fiji’s Covenant Brothers along with the Gameface Pacific Warriors, who featured as a guest side at the Manchester leg of the National Series.
