Gomarsall returns to Marauders

Thursday 5 August 2010 (UR7s)

The White Hart Marauders have revealed former England star Andy Gomarsall will captain the side at this year’s Middlesex Sevens (August 14).

With regular player-coach Howard Graham unavailable, due to his commitments coaching Harlequins on the day, Gomarsall will provide some crucial experience to what will once again be a young Marauders outfit.

The famous ‘pub side’, who have seen 78 internationals represent them since their inception, earned the right to play at Twickenham by finishing joint third on this summer’s National Sevens Series log.

They finished their season on a high at Newquay with a stunning semi-final win over Samurai, before losing out to the British Army in the final.

Twickenham will see a rematch with Samurai, with the pair drawn to meet again in the first round.

“We will go to Twickenham with our usual mix of youth and experience and maintain our policy of working with the players that have got us there and continuing the development of home grown talent,” said Team Manager Barrie Torbett.

“With Howard Graham committed to his day job with Quins, Andy (Gomarsall) was a natural choice to bring in for Middlesex. He has played for us on many occasions.

“During his days with Bedford he introduced a very raw Paul Sackey to our squad for the Lisbon Sevens! He also scored the winning try at the National Pub 7s against the Army in 2006 just before being called up again for the Rugby World Cup in France,” added Torbett.

Cwmtawe Sevens

This weekend see the Marauders travel to South Wales for the annual Cwmtawe Sevens. A young looking squad will try and seal their selection for Twickenham in a strong tournament that includes two Samurai teams, Swansea, Llanelli and Fiji’s Covenant Brothers.

Tom Jarvis, who featured for Olorun ID this summer, joins brother Paul in the squad along with forwards Adam Bishop and Simon Pitfield.

Chris Rose and Lee McLaughlin offer pace out wide with the additions of Manoa Satala and Kameli Vuadreu giving the side a real boost.

Tom Mitchell and Jake Henry are rested with minor injuries with Irish International Max Rantz-MacDonald joining up with the side for Middlesex following his return to fitness.
