OPS and Humless make US Nationals

Wednesday 4 August 2010 (UR7s)

Old Puget Sound (OPS) lived up their pre-tournament hype to graft out a win at the Pacific Coast Sevens Championship in Tacoma, Washington.

Meeting Humless in the Final, the lightening OPS were soon down 7-0 and with key man Isi Daveta in the bin they were under pressure. But tries to Pat Curtis, the returning Daveta and an opportunistic Fili Botitu effort, paved the way for an eventual 17-12 win.

Both OPS and Humless took the last two remaining spots for the USA National Club Sevens Championships on Aug 14-15.

OPS also had to come from behind in their semi-final clash against San Mateo. Trailing 7-15, the eventual winners rallied, thanks to the exciting Daveta, to come out 24-20 victors.

Humless of Provo had been dominant form throughout the day and impressed in a 24-7 semis win against Olympic. Experienced campaigner Jason Pye grabbing a welcome brace to send them through to the final and ultimately the Nationals.

The tournament took place under controversial circumstances as East Palo Alto were without star recruit and current USA 7s player Mike Pulu, due to an eligibility oversight. East Palo Alto (EPA) thought they had transferred Pulu’s eligibility from his 15s side San Francisco Golden Gate in time for the sevens circuit.

EPA only just lost out at the death to OPS (12-10) earlier on in the day.
