Local Swedish hopes were dashed at the weekend’s Stockholm’s Tens, with the Wooden Spoon edging Olorun Vikings to grab the overall title.

The Vikings, formerly known as Olorun Sharks, were defending champions heading into the Cup final showdown, but lost out by the narrowest of margins (14-15) to the talented Spoon.

With both sides visibly exhausted from the weekend’s play, it took a last minute bit of inspiration from the Spoon’s winger, who collected his own chip, to seal the victory.

Their win follows up on the Women's Wooden Spoon success, which saw them victorious at the RugbyRocks, West Country and Newquay events which accompanied the National Sevens Series in recent months.

French outfit Côté Ouvert, who had beaten Amsterdam Sevens finalists Millfield Old Boys in the quarter-finals (24-19), met the Vikings in the semis. The Vikings, who also included a number of regular English-based players, proving too strong at 24-12.

Despite having to defend for large chunks of the match, the Spoon showed some clinical finishing in their last four clash with the Stockholm Exiles, running out 19-0 winners.

Last year’s runners-up the Bootleggers were undone by the Spoon in the quarter-finals stages with the Vikings dispatching Kamikaze (57-0). Kukri Badgers, with a strong influx of London Scottish players, missed out in their quarter-final to the Exiles (33-17).

Elsewhere, the Plate was won by Teamlink Titans who just held on against a gritty Belgian side Leuven. Spaniards, Club Portuense, grabbed the Bowl victorious over Henley War Dogs while the Swedes from Linköping carried off the Shield with a win over the Welwyn Rangers.

The Ladies´ tournament was weaker than usual with the upcoming Women’s World Cup siphoning off many Stockholm regulars, both Swedish and foreign.

The Moody Cows proved the irresistible force just conceding the one try throughout the weekend. Their pace and fitness impressing in their final against Zurich Valkyries with 41-0 success.
