Here is a summary from the USA Club Sevens circuit as teams battled it out to secure the remaining spots at the USA Nationals taking place at San Francisco’s Treasure Island from August 14-15.
West
Hosts Denver Barbarians crushed the Gentlemen of Aspen to emphatically confirm their passage through to the Nationals.
It proved to be an all-Colorado affair at Dicks Sporting Goods Park at the Denver Sevens with the Barbos dominating the days showpiece (47-0). Eagles forward Mark Bokhoven was in typically dominant form with the likes of Maximo DeAchaval and Dewon Reed also superb.
In the semi-finals the Dallas Harlequins were soundly beaten by Denver 33-7 with Aspen overcoming the Olympic Club by the same score line. Denver (#1), Dallas (#2), and Aspen (#3) are the three qualifiers from the region for Nationals.
Mid-Atlantic
NOVA will head to Nationals as the Mid-Atlantic’s top seed following a win over Charlotte in the regional championships.
Charlotte will also join Bill Gardner’s team in San Francisco as the Mid-Atlantic’s second seed. Nova were made to work throughout the tournament and found themselves 17-12 down to Charlotte in the final. But Terris Gregory and Thretton Palamo tries gave NOVA yet another win at the event.
Northeast
New York Athletic Club (NYAC) continued their superb summer form by winning their fourth event in succession. Yet again they met Boston in the final and this time triumphed comfortably 41-7 with Miles Craigwell grabbing a hat-trick.
Both NYAC and Boston progress to Nationals along with Mystic River.
Midwest
Chicago Lions again proved themselves the number one side in the Midwest with a confidence boosting 47-7 win over the Chicago Griffins at the regional championships. Both teams will take their place in San Francisco. 1823 may have won the Taz, Cincinnati and Cleveland’s Rock ‘N’ Roll 7s tournaments this season but failed to shine here, not making the Cup knockouts.
This weekend sees the Pacific Coast 7s Championships as the two final spots for Nationals are filled. Eight teams will travel Tacoma Rugby Club.
