UR7s is once again bringing you some of the slightly alternative stories from around the globe which may have gone unnoticed over the last few weeks.
Here is our third installment of the crazy and wacky goings on of rugby sevens; Jamie Roberts, Elvis, Serevi's struggles and Guyana pumping iron!
Roberts still 'one of the boys'
Jamie Roberts might be well on his way to being a Cardiff Blues, Wales and British Lions legend but he won’t forget his roots in a hurry. Roberts has again spent some of his summer as one of the ‘backroom staff’ for old school sevens side the 'Glantaff Goats' in Newquay a few weeks ago.
The Cardiff-based Goats have enjoyed themselves at various big tournaments across Wales and England over the last few seasons. As well as kindly speaking to the National Sevens Series TV cameras, Roberts got stuck into physio and coaching duties, as well as fully embracing the camping and party element of the ever-popular Newquay Surf Sevens. UR7s salutes the former Wales Sevens man. Class act.
Sevens remembers Elvis!
Rugby sevens has always been Rock ‘n’ Roll in UR7s’ eyes.
But in Memphis, Tennessee that notion will take on extra significance when an annual sevens tournament celebrating the life of the King himself, Elvis Prestly, kicks into action in two weeks time (August 7).
Memphis Blues Rugby Club has been hosting the event since 1987 as teams from Southern ‘Miss’, Texas, Louisana, Memphis, Oklahoma and further afield make the pilgrimage to battle it out for the aptly named Hound Dog Championship!
And the women’s section of the club has also bought into the fun and festivities with the introduction of their own tournament - Priscilla 7s!
Thankyaveruhmuch.
Trouble for Serevi
Sevens legend Waisale Tikoisolomoni Serevi, has once again be keeping himself busy with yet another ‘guest appearance’ at a tournament, this time at last weekend’s Abbotsford Sevens in Canada.
Perhaps the least surprising moment of the weekend was seeing the retired star once again lace those boots for an invitational Fijian team.
According to reports it’s been a turbulent few months for Serevi back home in Fiji.
The former star player and national coach has had a management contract terminated for "immoral conduct".
This comes just months after his contract as Director of Rugby for Papua New Guinea was also terminated.
Businessman Steven Chand had given Serevi a lifeline via his Management One company, which hired the sevens legend to help former players continue their careers away from active sports.
Chand said that despite Serevi seeking forgiveness from the public for his off- field behaviour, which is rumoured to have led financial and marital problems, loss of employment and a battle with alcohol addiction,
He said Serevi did not honour moves they agreed on to help him deal with his alcohol problem.
"It's really disappointing," Chand said.
"I owe it to the public of Fiji and the world to be honest. I did everything to help this man but he betrayed our trust."
Serevi accepted the decision and said:
"I believe I have to re- look at myself and try to make a change.
UR7s wishes you well WS
Guyana rewarded for hard graft
Guyana’s win at last weekend’s CACSO Games again proves their status as the number one force in Caribbean Sevens. Led by West Indies’ Claudius Butts, with player/coach Theodore Henry instrumental, the side conceded just three tries across the whole weekend.
Whilst they might not be able to enjoy the cutting edge facilities that the likes of South Africa and England have at their disposal, we found some intriguing photos of the side of the last few months as they went about preparations for this summer at Guyana's Michael Parris Fitness Centre. Keep shifting that tin boys!
