Portugal & Spain World Uni champions

Monday 26 July 2010 (UR7s)

Hosts Portugal continued to show their huge potential with an impressive win at 4th World University Championship Rugby Sevens in Porto.

Facing Russia in the final of the Men’s Competition at a sweltering Bessa Stadium, the Portuguese were inspired at times in the 35-17 win.

The win follows up on the senior side’s victory in the FIRA’s European Championships earlier this month.

The much fancied Great Britain side fell at the semi-final stage to the Russians (12-22) powering through Iberian rivals Spain.

The British, who had targeted a medal in the build-up to the event, eventually bought home the bronze after a play-off win against the Spanish.

Japan lifted the Plate after just overcoming Canada (22-24) with Poland taking the Bowl. In the group stages Portugal went unbeaten with Great Britain also finishing top of their pool.

Russia also had to settle for silver in the Women’s Competition with Spain triumphing. The pair played out a compelling finale to the tournament with the Spanish showing the better durability to grab gold (17-10).

Beaten semi-finalists Portugal won bronze with a win over Canada whilst Italy beat GB to the Plate.

France will host the fifth running of the World University Championships in 2012.
