Guyana win CACSO gold

Monday 26 July 2010 (UR7s)

This weekend saw Guyana storm to rugby sevens gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games (CACSO).

Meeting Jamaica in the final at Guyana’s National Stadium in Providence, the hosts continued their fine form to comfortably take the title with a 31-7 win over rivals Jamaica.

Led by West Indies captain Claudius Butts, Guyana lived up to their billing as the dominant Caribbean force in sevens.

Butts’ interception try got them off the mark with player/coach Theodore Henry also crossing early on.
Further tries came from Dominic Lespierre, Richard Staglon and a lengthy Dwayne Schroeder effort to seal the emphatic win.

Fellow NACRA-playing nation Mexico took home the bronze with a shock 10-7 win over Trinidad & Tobago in the third/fourth play-off.

In the semi-finals Guyana proved too powerful for the Mexicans (31-0) and it was a similar story for the eventual champions in the quarter-finals against Venezuela (29-7).

“We came into this tournament knowing that we were the team to beat, so we just came out and took it one game at a time,” said Theodore Henry.

"The guys played excellent, I couldn’t ask for anything more, it was a total team effort.”
