National Series players part of Premiership Sevens

Thursday 22 July 2010 (UR7s & ESPN scrum.com)

The JP Morgan Asset Management Premiership Rugby Sevens Series reaches Welford Road on Friday night where hosts Leicester, Leeds, Newcastle and Sale will go head-to-head for a place in the tournament finale.

The action kicked off The Stoop in Twickenham last week where Saracens and Harlequins booked their passage through to The Rec on August 6 where the inaugural champions will be crowned.

Another six games of pool action at Welford Road will produce the next two qualifiers with the final places set to be decided at Northampton's Franklin's Gardens on July 30.

As well as using talent from their Academies, the Premiership sides are also able to 'invite' players to represent them in the Series. Newcastle Falcons have included nine players who were part of the HFW Wailers successful National Sevens Series campaign that saw them finish third and qualify for Middlesex Sevens.

They include Blackheath flyer, Tyson Lewis, who finished second in the try-scorer’s log in the Series and the dangerous Jack Smales. Olorun ID’s Sam Shires ialso called up to a Falcons side that will be coached by Academy and Wailers coach Mark Laycock.

Among Newcastle's main strike threats on the night will be former England Sevens wing Charlie Amesbury, while Scotland Under-20s star Michael Tait will also add plenty of pace and finishing ability out wide.

"Obviously having someone like Charlie Amesbury in our squad gives us a real strike threat which we will try and exploit," he commented.

"But there is a mixture of Sevens experience and raw talent in this group which we will look to use for what we know will be a tough competition."

Sale Sharks are expected to name a similar side which made the quarter-finals of the second National Series leg in Manchester.

We have release Sam to play in the Premiership Series, not so much of a surprise considering he played 'A' league for Newcastle all last season though?!?!
